BIOGRAPHY: Hloniphile Khuzwayo
Hloniphile was born in White City, Jabavu, Soweto, but currently she resides in Senaoane, Soweto. She started art when she was still in high school. In 2005 she began her studies at Artist Proof Studio and she completed her three-year course in printmaking in 2007. During her third year at Artist Proof Studio she did her internship at Art Bank Johannesburg. She is currently working in the Artist Proof Studio Gallery.
Hloni’s artworks are influenced by her background, religion, gender, and race. Her neighbourhood and the city of Johannesburg are filled with visual images that reflect both an African and Western material and visual culture. She has chosen specific visual images that relate to her exploration of her identity as a young African woman. ‘I am in between identities and characteristics of belonging to a particular group. Being in between African and Western patterns of social behaviour makes me unsure of what is African and what is not. Do I try to merge them together? Is there any difference between what society and history define and categorize as African, or Western, black, female, beauty. The works reflect a search and a merging of visual images and objects I reorganize as Western symbols and African symbols. I am searching for a common ground and balance between the past and the future, searching, measuring and questioning my inherited and ancestral history.’
